Over the years, there has been a significant advancement in the field of technology and this has given rise to many new gadgets with a prolific number of features. One such device is a hard drive. People desire to own a good hard drive because it is a very useful gadget which performs the crucial function of storage and transportation of data. A hard drive is a versatile object because it is suitable to use with various types of latest gadgets like laptops, desktops, video recording devices, digital cameras, smartphones, tablets etc. Hard drives can be used anytime and anywhere because they do not require internet connectivity to perform their functions.
Things must know before buying SSD Drives
- Hard Drive Types
To meet the specific requirements of the users, there are different types of hard drives available in the market. The two very prominent categories of external hard drives are HDDs and SSDs. HDD stands for Hard disk Drive whereas SSD stands for solid-state Drive. Hard disk drives have internal moving parts and they function by storing the information on a spinning disk. On the contrary, solid-state drives do not have any moving parts as they use a kind of flash memory for data storage. Both hard disk drives and solid-state drives are portable.
- SSD vs HDD – Pros and Cons of an SSD
A solid-state drive is comparatively more beneficial than a hard disk drive because of the presence of many reliable features. SSDs are lighter in weight, smaller in size and therefore easy to carry and use anywhere. When compared to HDDs, it can be observed that SSDs operate at a very high speed and provide effective results. With a hard disk drive, there is always a risk of losing the data due to the failure of the drive. This risk is eliminated in a solid-state drive because even if the device in which the drive is placed breaks down, the content in the SSD is unaffected.
It can be safely removed and used in another device without the loss of any information. Unlike HDDs, SSDs are not prone to accidental damage and can be used happily without any worries. The main demerit of SSDs is that while HDDs are easily available at an affordable price, SSDs are very expensive. They are not as famous and accessible as HDDs yet. Most of the SSDs are compatible only with latest devices.
- How Important Is Drive Speed?
Drive speed is an important factor which determines the performance of a device. A higher drive speed ensures that the boot time of a computer is reduced considerably. It also contributes to opening the required documents instantly without any lag. With a good drive speed, the user can swiftly perform activities of copying, duplicating and saving the files. Even various applications can be kick-started in a jiffy. All sorts of programs and games will have a faster loading time due to the availability of a high drive speed. Drive speed also contributes to swift data transfer. In the matter of speed, SSDs are much faster than HDDs.
There are a few other vital factors which determine the efficiency of a hard drive.
Capacity refers to the amount of data which can be stored on the hard drives. A drive with a high storage capacity helps to stock a colossal number of different types of files like documents, images, and videos etc. People who require an extensive amount of space for securing the information might find that HDDs are a better option. HDDs are available in various sizes in terms of data storage. The highest capacity of HDD is 4 TB. But, for people with a normal data storage requirement with a power-packed functionality, SSDs do a good task. Consumer-level SSDs can store only up to 512 GB.
SSDs outshine HDDs in terms of performance. solid-state drive (SSD) are extraordinary drives that function with unparalleled efficiency and unmatchable speed. SSDs have an exponential read and write time. In comparison to HDDs, they are much swifter and better at the performance. The modern SSDs have the capability to operate at a speed of around 500 MB/s.
One of the most pivotal factors that reflect the usefulness of a hard drive is its data protection capability. No matter how the built or the performance of a drive is, the factor which catches the attention of a user is security. Solid-state drives are the leaders in bestowing supreme security levels to the data stored. These drives are based on flash memories. So, there is hardly any risk of losing the data. Even if the device to which the SSD is connected fails or crashes, the SSD can be safely removed and the data be easily retrieved.
Reliability of the SSD is an important factor to consider while buying them. A reliable choice of SSD will improve the performance of your computer. But it will end up being a waste of your money if you buy an unreliable SSD. As this technology is relatively new, it is considered less reliable when compared to traditional hard drives, but SSD’s are rapidly overcoming this. Theoretically speaking, SSD’s have a superior performance when compared to traditional hard drives. Reliability of every electronic product that we buy is important, and the same applies when we buy SSD’s. Usually, we expect SSD’s to last long. Although they have superior performance, this performance needs to last long.
Pricing is a very important factor while buying a SSD. The price of SSD’s has come down drastically over the years. When this hardware came out in the market, it was exceedingly costly. It was a hardware that only the rich people and the enthusiasts bought. But over the years, the pricing of this product has changed. Now they are known for providing best performance at a very low price. Although, they are relatively costly when compared to the hard drives, their performance and features outweigh the traditional hard drives. Do not always go buy the price of the item. It is a long term investment and is definitely worth your money.
Their prices vary with their capacity. A SSD with a lower capacity costs lower when compared to a SSD with a higher capacity. They are available in a wide range of capacities from 20GB to 1TB. So go for the capacity that you need. Decide, beforehand, your needs and then but the product according to them.
Long life of an SSD is a must. Always check for its warranty and services while buying the product. We basically replace our hard drives with the storage state drives and hence expect it to last long or at least as long as our traditional hard drives do. Traditional hard drives usually last for at least three years (on normal conditions), so the next logical question is how long to SSD’s last in comparison to HDD’s. One unique feature of SSD’s is that they do not have any moving parts. So wear and tear due to movement or friction will not occur. However, they are more prone to power failure when compared to HDD’s. There have been reports of data corruption and data loss when there is a power failure when the drive is running. This has resulted in many people avoided this technology.
However, with advances in the field of technology, these types of problems are decreasing in number. Anyway, always make it a point to check for the warranty of the storage state device while buying it. Also have a look at company’s customer service techniques. Ask people who have already bought this product for their opinion and then move ahead.
External vs. Internal
There are two typed of storage state drives namely internal SSD and external SSD. So which one should you use? Internal SSD is something that is fixed inside your personal computer whereas an external SSD is not. You need to carry the external SSD wherever you go. Also, the speed of internal SSD is higher than that of an external SSD. There is difference in performance too. So while buying a storage state driver, decide on your choice of SSD. Depending on your needs, go for either an internal or external SSD. If you are not very specific about your performance and just want to try out SSD’s, go for an external one. If you are interested in superior performance and speed, go for the internal SSD.
Is SSD right for you??
It all depends on your needs. If you are short on money, are satisfied with the performance with your hard disk drive, then do not go for an SSD. On the other hand, if you want to enhance the performance of your computer or run applications that require high processing speeds, then go for a SSD. A SSD will improve the speed and performance you’re your computer 10 fold but at the same time are expensive when compared to traditional hard disk drive. Additionally, it also has many features that are far more superior in comparison with a HDD. So try, it out. You will not be disappointed.
Although SSDs are a bit costlier and have a slightly low capacity, this new-age hard drives operate at a very high speed and assure that the data is completely secure.
