Drones otherwise known as unmanned aerial vehicles are making great strides in the field of defense and science. Here is a look at the different and popular usages of drone technology or UAV (Unmanned aerial vehicle).
Drone Technology & History
Drones or UAV is a concept that came into existence back in 1849. Austria used unmanned balloons to attack the city of Venice. That was when the concept of drones as a technology originated. Later it was extensively used in World War 1 in 1916 that was named Aerial Target. Although, people never got to see this drone in action, it was still a first step in this field. Following this, many UAVs were created like Larynx, Queen, DH.82B Queen Bee and many others. This is when people started using drones as a weapon. During world war 3, drones were extensively used for training (teaching soldiers how to take them out) and at the same time to attack the enemy. This was technically the birth of drone technology.
SURVEYING / MAPPING / GIS
Today, drones are extensively used for mapping and surveying especially in the defense sector. The help to map out an unoccupied area give details about the lay of the land. Drones help you to collect important date in less amount of time. For example, if the defense tea want to surve an uncharted area, then the initially send in drones over that area. Drones take pictures of the area, do a complete analysis of the structure of the land and give important details of the uncharted area. In this way, the team knows beforehand what they will encounter and hence give them a chance to prepare for it.
Drones can be used for home security as well as commercial security. UAV (Drones) can help us with any things like traffic surveillance, anti – terror operations, theft prevention, forest fire prevention, search and rescue operations just to name a few. Drones for home security are an amazing and innovative creation. They use superior technology to monitor the movements in the house and also detect unusual activities.
Search and Rescue
It is being increasingly used in search and rescue missions. Usually when people get lost in dense and difficult terrain, like deserts or forests, it is difficult to find them. In order to find the faster the rescue team sends in drones. The drones find the people and pin points the exact location of the people who are lost. The rescue team later directly goes to the location to rescue the people. If drones never existed, then it would be highly difficult to find the people as it is difficult to cover such a large distance in a short span of time.
Science & Research
Drones are helping to push the boundaries of science and experiment with new technologies. Drones can have varying sizes, ranging from the size of an airplane to a small insect. Depending on its use, the size of the drone varies. Drones have helped us with many things like volcano surveying, coastal area surveying and many others. Going near volcanoes is highly dangerous for humans, but we can send drones to get a look of what’s going on. This helps scientists to determine when the volcano is going to erupt and helps give warning to all the areas that might be affected. Similarly, the coastal areas change continuous due to variation in water levels and wave patterns, drones help us to get the actual picture of what is going on and how the changes will affect human kind.
Unnamed Cargo: Warehousing and Inventory Drone
Warehousing and inventor drones are becoming very common with many companies preferring drone to manage their inventory to reduce manual labor and also to improve precision of work. Companies like DroneScan are moving towards using drones extensively. There are any advantages to using drones for this purpose like safety measures, more work in less time, energy conservation and many others. It is highly recommended that companies start using the drone technology to enhance their performance and gains.
Drones have found a new and innovative way to be helpful. They can now deliver packages from one place to another. In fact Amazon delivered its first package using a drone in 2016. Unmanned copters delivering packages is not a dream anymore. It is rapidly becoming a reality. The two important things to consider are the package size and the distance. Drones are efficient for short distance travel and delivery. Package size directly impacts the efficiency of the drone. The drone needs to be able to support heavy weight packages and also travel long distances. Currently scientists are working on getting over this hurdle.
Drones used for agriculture are called agricultural drones. They help in monitoring the growth of crops and also help in increasing the production. They combine technology with farming to give better approaches to improve the yield. Using sensors and top notch imaging techniques, they help the farmers in identifying the drawbacks of their methods and help them in coming up with newer and superior farming techniques. Drones also help to reduce manual labor and are a good substitute for tractors.
Drones have found a purpose in almost every sector and wildlife is one of them. Drones are now extensively being used in protecting wildlife by identifying illegal poachers. Forests are usually dense and cover a lot of ground. It becomes difficult to monitor who goes into and comes out of the forest. Any poachers have taken advantage of this situation and have continued their hunting. Drones have helped the authorities to put a stop to such illegal activities. Drones monitor the entire region for any signs of illegal activity and immediately notify the authorities if such activities take place.
Drone Technology have taken the entire world by surprise. Usually, people considered drones to be some kind of a superficial technology and did not believe that such a technology would become a reality. Not only has it become real, is highly being used by many sectors with high rates of success. And this is only going to improve. Great strides are being made in this field and researchers and scientists are very positive drones will help the push the boundaries and improve the quality of life.
